“I am convinced we have a degree of delight, and that no small one, in the real misfortunes and pains of others.” —Edmund Burke (A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful)
The Spectacle of Suffering revolves around one central theme: violence. Each issue navigates a new topic confronting our cultural appetite for brutality. The issue “Violence on Photography, Print, and Screen” explores the spectatorship of violence in art and media. Do images of suffering inspire sympathy or apathy? Can photography as ‘shock therapy’ prevent war? Is violence a harmless entertainment trope or does it sensationalize and perpetuate abuse?
